Congratulations to Susan Smith, who recently won an Outstanding Student Oral Presentation Award at the Association of Field Ornithologists meeting in Orono, ME on 26-29 July 2007. Susan’s presentation was on “Influence of diet and food availability on fuel use and storage in songbirds during autumn migration in Rhode Island”.
Kathy Vigness Raposa received the NASA-MSU Professional Enhancement Award for travel to the annual U.S. Chapter of the International Association of Landscape Ecologists conference in Tucson, AZ.
Yuyu Zhou was selected by the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing as the recipient of the 2007 BAE Systems Award for best student paper for "A Manova-based and Object-oriented Statistical Method for Extraction of Impervious Surface Area." The award consists of a certificate and monetary grant, and the award-winning paper will be published in Photogrammetric Engineering & Remote Sensing (PE&RS).

Regen Jamieson was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to Malaysia for 2006-2007 by the U.S. Department of State and the Malaysian-American Commission on Educational Exchange in support of her thesis project "Tracking the movement of translocated Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) in Peninsular Malaysia using GPS telemetry." Established in 1946 and named for the former senator from Arkansas, J. William Fulbright, the scholarship is designed to foster mutual understanding between people of the United States and people of other countries through educational and cultural exchanges.
Regen Jamieson was awarded a $5,000 grant from the Denver Zoological Foundation, $800 from the University of Rhode Island Provost Graduate Research Grant, and $1,000 from Wild Asia for her research on Asian Elephants in Malaysia.
Kathy Vigness Raposa was awarded a P.E.O. Scholar Award for the 2006-2007 academic year. The P.E.O. Sisterhood is a philanthropic, educational organization committed to encouraging increased opportunities for higher education for women.
Clare Wormald was awarded "Best Student Paper" by the Southern California and Baja California District of the American Institute of Fishery Research Biologists for her paper "Testing Assumptions of Mark Recapture Theory: An Example with a Tropical Snapper" presented at the annual meeting of the Western Society of Naturalists in November 2005.
Yuyu Zhou was selected by the ASPRS (American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing) as one of three awardees in the country for the prestigious Space Imaging Award for the Application of High Resolution Digital Satellite Imagery. The Award was established to support remote sensing education and stimulate the development of applications of high-resolution digital satellite imagery for applied research by students.

Regen Jamieson was awarded a $10,000 grant from the Denver Zoological Foundation and $1,000 from the Sophie Danforth Conservation Biology Fund/Rhode Island Zoological Foundation Society for her research on Asian Elephants in Malaysia. She also has been awarded a National Science Foundation K-12 Graduate Teaching Fellowship through the URI Graduate School of Oceanography for 2005-2006.
Suzanne Enser received a John Wald Science Grant from the Rhode Island Natural History Survey and The Nature Conservancy for continuing research on a rare plant community at Beavertail State Park in Jamestown, RI. The study is being conducted in cooperation with the Rhode Island Natural Heritage Program.

Lee Anne Frietas and Julia Royster were awarded NSF fellowships with the Graduate School of Oceanography K-12 program.
Regen Jamieson was awarded a $2500.00 travel scholarship from the Greater Boston Women's Travel Club for her research on elephants in Malaysia.
Clare Wormald received a University of Rhode Island Graduate Tuition Scholarship.
T.J. McGreevy was awarded a partial American Genetics Association Scholarship.
Mike Traber, as part of a small group in RI, received the USDA Group Honor Award for Excellence for his part in conducting large-scale eelgrass restoration in Narragansett Bay. This is the highest award the USDA gives out.
